Sycamores Calendar Artists

The artwork in the 2024 Children’s Art Calendar was created by foster youth at our El Nido residential campus and students in an enrichment art class at Sycamores’ Palmdale Family Resource Center. While the paintings all share the common theme of food, the two groups took very different approaches to creating their masterpieces.

For the foster youth living apart from their families, Sycamores’ art teacher Eric De Gama encouraged the youth to explore personal memories associated with food in their artwork. According to Eric, “We bond and celebrate with family and friends over food – preparing food and eating together.”  Using words and storytelling elements to add graphic interest, the youth recreated special moments of connection and community in their lives.

The Palmdale class, led by artist Mary Kay Wilson, used the medium of watercolor to bring vibrant images of favorite foods to life. With the goal of helping the children experience seeing the way an artist sees, the young artists were introduced to basic concepts of drawing before beginning their explorations with paint. Regardless of the approach, Mary Kay said, “Working with the young artists is an incredibly fulfilling experience as we assist each one in bringing their creative vision to life.”
